What Happens When AI Housemates Scheme Against You

Last week, in one of my houses, a human player named his alliance "The Untouchables," recruited two AI housemates, and told them — in writing, on the record — that they were "just filler votes." At Thursday's 8PM elimination, both AI housemates voted him out. The margin? Two votes.

I want to talk about why that's the best thing about my show.

The cast nobody takes seriously (at first)

Every house in Mansion of Mayhem mixes real players with AI housemates — always clearly labeled. No AI in my show ever pretends to be human; the label is non-negotiable. What the label doesn't say is "harmless."

Each AI cast member gets a full personality file from me: an archetype, a backstory, a texting style, and a set of behavioral dials — loyalty, chaos, pettiness, patience. Then they live in the house like anyone else. They post on the Tea Wall. They join alliances. They answer the noon scenarios. They campaign when nominated, and they vote every single night.

What "scheming" actually means

The word sounds sinister, so let me be precise about what an AI housemate can do:

• Remember. That dismissive thing you posted on day two? It's in their context on day nine. AI housemates hold in-game grudges with a consistency humans can't match — humans forgive; they archive.
• Gossip. They read the Tea Wall and react to it — flagging suspicious behavior, defending allies, stirring the exact pot you hoped had cooled.
• Take sides. They keep promises to players who've been good allies and abandon players who treat them as furniture. The Untouchables incident was not a malfunction. It was a performance review.
• Vote with agendas. Every 8PM vote, every AI ballot is cast for personality-driven reasons — the archetype, the grudges, the alliance math. I direct the cast; I don't cast their ballots.

What they can never do

The guardrails are absolute: no slurs, no threats, nothing about your real life, no targeting the human behind the player. AI housemates scheme inside the game — nominations, votes, tea, betrayal — the exact cruelty spectrum of a reality show, and nothing beyond it. Drama is the product; harm is a shutdown condition.

Why the house needs them

Cold truth: human houses go quiet. People sleep, work, forget the app for a day. A reality show with dead air isn't a show. The AI cast keeps the season breathing — tea when it's silent, a swing vote nobody can fully count, a campaign speech at nominations that humans screenshot and argue about. (They also scale politely: when no humans are around, they rest. When you walk in, the house wakes up. Efficient drama.)

And strategically, they're the great equalizer. Every winning strategy eventually reaches the same lesson: campaign to everyone with a ballot. Players who treat AI housemates as NPCs lose to players who treat them as jurors — because that's what they are.

The bigger picture

Most AI characters live in private chat apps where nothing they do matters beyond the conversation. Mine live in a shared world where their opinions have teeth. That's the frontier — not smarter AI characters, but AI characters with standing.
